Openreach regularly engages in Civil Engineering works such as excavation, trenching and ‘frame & cover’ renewal. These operations require the use of heavy construction materials and equipment such as pneumatic rammers, generators, hydraulic power packs and whacker plates. We identified a significant manual handling issue; site operator teams needed to load heavy equipment into service vehicles and unload it at remote locations. The challenge was exacerbated by the limitations of permanently installed solutions, which were restricted by the access position of the vehicle when deployed on site.

To address this issue, we developed a bespoke VanMate attachment that offered several advantages over the traditional fixed solutions. The custom design allowed for the handling of multiple load types using a single attachment, while reducing the overall system size and weight. This was achieved by combining the VanMate attachment with our universal mast system and a heavy-duty trolley, designed specifically for use on rough terrain. This combination allows the operators to both lift and unload the equipment from the vehicle and move it from neat storage in the vehicle to the work area without additional equipment or transferring of the load.

The solution was deployed across over 600 vehicles within the Openreach network. The VanMate system provided greater flexibility and efficiency by allowing operators to load and unload equipment more easily, regardless of the vehicle's position. The reduced size and weight of the system also made it more portable and easier to handle.
